🎇Have you ever noticed how a simple virtual interaction can spark something profound—something that compels us to take things offline and meet face-to-face? It’s as if virtual gatherings are the gateway drug to in-person connection, creating a space where boundaries dissolve, and possibilities expand.

🫱🏽‍🫲🏽This concept resonates deeply with me. Last week I was the hybrid emcee for the Government Social Media Conference (GSMCON).

💌After 4 years of being the virtual emcee, I was invited to be the hybrid emcee and on-site for the first time in Orlando.  This is the first way “Virtual Is The Gateway Drug To In-Person”.  As the virtual emcee, I added massive value in lighting up the virtual part of this conference and gaining trust of the conference organizers.

This year for the big reveal, I created this video to tell in-person emcee, Ariana Donly, that I had a gift for her 10th anniversary.

🏄🏽‍♂️More importantly, when I got off-stage, Denise from the Hawaii Police Department Public Relations Specialist came up to me and said she had a gift for me.  She brought me a box of chocolate covered macadamia nuts!  Then she proceeded to tell me this story:

👍🏽“John, you helped make the GSMCON virtual so good last year that I was able to convince my management to send FOUR people in-person this year!  Mahalo! (thank you in Hawaiian)”

💪🏽So, let’s talk about the power of virtual interaction. It’s more than just convenience; it’s the start of something tangible. Virtual events open doors, introduce ideas, and connect us with people we might not otherwise meet. They’re a testing ground for relationships and partnerships. But the real magic happens when the virtual leaps into the physical—when we sit across from someone, shake their hand, and share those moments that can never be replicated through a screen.

👩🏽‍💻Why Virtual Matters

Virtual events are inclusive, accessible, and low-cost. They’re the perfect entry point for experimentation and innovation. Whether it’s attending a webinar, joining an online mastermind, or simply connecting via video call, these interactions allow us to dip our toes into new waters, explore shared interests, and build networks globally.

But the journey doesn’t stop here.

🌉The Bridge to In-Person

In-person events take virtual connections to the next level. They nurture relationships cultivated online, offering depth, authenticity, and unforgettable experiences. They’re where ideas solidify and shared goals materialize. At GSMCON in Orlando, we didn’t just strategize—we bonded, laughed, and built relationships that will undoubtedly shape the future for all involved.

👉🏽Your Gateway Awaits

Are you ready to cross the bridge from virtual to in-person? Start small. Attend a local meetup or organize a coffee catch-up with someone you’ve connected with online. Explore stepping into conferences, workshops, or masterminds that align with your aspirations. You’ll be amazed at how the digital becomes human when we take those first steps offline.

Let’s embrace the power of connection, starting virtually and blossoming into the real world.

👑While Content is King, Connection is the real and more valuable 👑Queen.
